Jpop Recommend #94 Natsu no owari by Naotaro Moriyama

Natsu no owari

Naotaro Moriyama

Released in August 2003, this is his 3rd single.  The lyrics are like a literature.  The words used are not easy to understand.  For your reference, I uploaded some of the photos at the bottom for each word.  I hope it helps you to understand and appreciate this song better.

Mizubasho yureru azemichi
On the footpath between rice fields where skunk cabbages sway in the wind
Kata narabe yume wo tsumuida
we walked side by side and weaved our dreams
Nagareyuku toki ni sasabune wo ukabe
As the time flows by, we floated a bamboo-leaf boat
Yake-ochita natsu no koiuta
A love song was burned down in summer
Wasureji no hito wa utakata
Once I thought I will never forget vanished in an instant
Sora wa yuugure
The sky turns into sunset

Tohou ni kureta mama furi-yamanu ame no naka
I was at a loss as the rain keeps falling
Anata wo matte ita  hitokage no nai eki de
I was waiting for you at a deserted station

Natsu no owari natsu no owari niwa
At the end of summer, when the end of summer comes,
Tada anata ni aitaku   naruno
it makes me simply wish to see you
Itsuka to onaji kaze fuki-nukeru kara
because the same wind like before passes through

Tsuioku wa hito no kokoro no kizuguchi ni fukaku shimi-iri
Reminiscences soak deeply into the people's wounded heart
Kasumi tatsu nobe ni natsukusa wa shigeri
A misty field overgrown with summer grass
Arekara doredake no toki ga itazura ni sugita darouka
How much time has passed by in vain since then?
Seseragi no youni
like a stream

Dareka ga ii-    kaketa   kotoba yose-atsumete
Gathering words that someone stopped unfinished
Daremo ga wasureyuku natsu no hi wa kaeranai
It won't return as everyone is forgetting about that summer day

Natsu no inori natsu no inori wa
A prayer in summer, when we pray in summer,
Taenaru hotarubi no shirabe
it's like a exquisite tune by a glow of a firefly,
Kaze ga yurashita fuurin no hibiki
or a sound of wind chime rung by the wind

Natsu no owari natsu no owari niwa
At the end of summer, when the end of summer comes,
Tada anata ni aitaku   naruno
it makes me simply wish to see you
Itsuka to onaji kaze fuki-nukeru kara
because the same wind like before passes through

Natsu no owari natsu no owari niwa
At the end of summer, when the end of summer comes,
Tada anata ni aitaku   naruno
it makes me simply wish to see you
Itsuka to onaji kaze fuki-nukeru kara
because the same wind like before passes through

<Word in detail>

Mizubasho, Asian skunk cabbage
I was surprised to find out the English name for "Mizu-basho", what a awful name for a flower so pretty as this one!
Mizu-basho is often found in swamps and wet woods.
In Japan, the most famous place to see them will be 尾瀬国立公園, Oze National Park.

Sasabune, a toy boat made of bamboo leaf

Hotarubi,  a glow of a firefly

Furin, wind chime
In old Japanese houses, we hang a wind chime at our balcony in summer
to enjoy its sound and feel cooler.  There are several different materials
used for the wind chimes but the most popular ones were made with
bronze cast or glass.
